Varuna Mitra Hydro Dynamics (VMHD)
Varuna Mitra Hydro Dynamics is digitization of complex real world hydro dynamics that express how the processes and phenomenon works with sufficient precision and accuracy to allow prediction and confident decision-making. This surface water resource rainfall-runoff model attempts to establish the link between the precipitation measured over the catchment and runoff (stream flow) observed at the considered outlet.
The meteorological input can be either rainfall or snowfall depending by the air temperature. Although precipitation and runoff can be considered as surface waters, the transformation of the first into the second at the catchment scale involves many hydrological processes (interception, evapotranspiration, subsurface flow, groundwater recharge, channel routing, etc.) of which the most important take place underground. Varuna Mitra Hydro Dynamics model is continuous, distributed, physically based, and modular.
The VMHD model has two components. 1. Initialization Component that initializes and saves the parameters 2. Run off Simulation component that simulates the surface runoff interacting with other hydrological processes. The basic input data for the above components / processes are
1. Territorial Data (Digital Elevation Model, the land use and soil raster maps)
2. Meteorological Data (Air temperature, Air humidity, Wind speed, and Rain intensity)
3. Watershed Characterization Data (Leaf Area Index - LAI, Vegetation cover, Vegetation height, Albedo, Linke, Hydrological indexes - Manning, soil water contents, transmissivity exponent, horizontal permeability, and soil thickness)
