Varuna Mitra

Varuna and Mitra are devas frequently referred to in the ancient Indian scripture of the Rigveda. They are protectors of the righteous order of rta. Their connection is so close that they are frequently linked in the dvandva compound "Mitra Varuna".

Varuna is a god of the water and of the celestial ocean, as well as a god of law of the underwater world. A Makara is his mount. In Hindu mythology, Varuna is considered the god of all forms of the water element, particularly the oceans. Mitra is an important divinity in Vedic, Avestan, Buddhism and Mithraism. Both Vedic Mitra and Avestan Mithra derive from an Indo-Iranian common noun *mitra-, generally reconstructed to have meant "covenant, treaty, agreement, promise." In Sanskrit and modern Indo-Aryan languages, mitra means "friend" emphasizing aspects of binding and alliance.
